Having lived in Las Vegas for more than 30 years, we are pretty darned spoiled when it comes to quality world-class entertainment. Whenever we go on a cruise, we seldom go to the “shows” because they don’t even come close to what we have on the Vegas Strip. We are true “show snobs.”

So when my husband asked a few days ago if I wanted to go down to the Union Plaza to see a show called “THE PHAT PACK,” I was hesitant. I had never heard of the show, and, even in Vegas, some of the smaller showrooms have truly subpar performers.

The show’s background:

Ted Keegan played “The Phantom” in Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.  Randal Keith played “Jean Valjean” in Les Miserables on Broadway. Bruce Ewing played “Jinx” in Forever Plaid (one of my husband’s all time favorites) on the National Tour and in Vegas. The three met while performing in “Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular.” After Phantom closed, inspired by the spirit of the original Rat Pack, they formed “THE PHAT PACK.”  And they are accompanied on the piano by the charismatic and talented Joey Singer, who was Debbie Reynolds’ musical director for over 25 years.

Since the show’s description sounded pretty intriguing, we went ahead and booked the tickets.

BUT…. we had instant buyer’s remorse when we got to the small Union Plaza showroom and literally only a handful of people were there – it wasn’t even half full. With meaningful glances at each other, my husband and I settled resignedly into our seats, fully prepared to sneak away later in the performance.

The only way I can describe this show is….MAGICAL! From the first chorus when Randal Keith and Bruce Ewing took the stage, until the last echoes died away in the showroom, we were entranced, enthralled, delighted and captivated.  (Did I use enough superlatives?) Not only are their voices sheer heaven, they bring an incredible energy and passion to every single note. No matter what size the crowd, they just love to entertain, they love music and they love their audience, and that love lights up their whole performance.

The bad news: Ted Keegan wasn’t on hand for this performance.

Instead, honorary PHAT PACK member Kristen Hertzenberg, who played “Christine” in the Las Vegas Phantom production, was on hand to fill in for Ted. Kristen, together with Randal, Bruce and Joey, took us on a wonderful musical tour of their personal journeys to Broadway.  The show was intimate, funny, and uplifting and filled with fabulous music all the way through. You truly have to hear it to believe it.

The good news: Ted Keegan wasn’t on hand for this performance.

Now we have a perfect excuse to go back and see the show again! We fully intend on bringing everyone we know as many times as possible.

My only question is: why wasn’t this show standing room only?!! This has got to be Las Vegas’ best kept secret.  But I know it won’t be for long, and I am already mourning the day when THE PHAT PACK will move on to huge audiences in the oversized main showrooms. With this kind of talent, it is only a matter of time. But in the meantime, consider us PHAT PACK Raving Fans.
